Pretoria East is known for security estates and larger family homes, and DStv installation in Pretoria East often means more than one dish and one decoder. Owners want an Explora Ultra in the main living area, signal in a few bedrooms or a study, and an installation that satisfies the estate's rules. OnspotElec is an authorised DStv installer that comes out to Faerie Glen, Garsfontein, Moreleta Park, Lynnwood, Menlyn, Silver Lakes, Equestria, Woodhill and the surrounding suburbs.
Estate livingGetting Estate Approval Before the Installation
Most estates control what may be fixed to the outside of a house. These are the answers worth having before you book:
- Does the estate have a communal dish system, or are individual dishes allowed?
- Where may a dish be mounted, and are there limits on size, colour or visibility from the street?
- Does the HOA need a written application or a plan before external work is done?
- What contractor access process does security use, and during which hours may contractors work?
With those sorted, the visit can focus on the work itself. If the estate has a shared system, the job becomes an estate or complex connection rather than a new dish on your roof.
Several TV Points: Choosing the Right Setup
The right setup depends mainly on whether each room needs its own choice of channel.
| Setup | What it gives you | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| One decoder, one TV | The simplest arrangement | Fine for a single viewing area. |
| One decoder feeding extra TVs | The same channel on more than one screen | Every TV shows whatever the decoder is tuned to. |
| XtraView (two or three linked decoders) | Different channels in different rooms on one subscription | DStv charges an access fee per additional decoder. A suitable LNB and a cable to each decoder are needed. |
Our XtraView and additional TV point service covers linking decoders and running the cables. The article on properties with several viewing points compares the options in more depth.
Explora Ultra in a Larger Home

The Explora Ultra is DStv's current flagship PVR. It is 4K-capable, records several channels at once and has built-in Wi-Fi and streaming apps. DStv recommends its Smart LNB for Explora installations, so moving from an older decoder often means replacing the LNB as well.
In a big house, where the main decoder sits matters: close to where you watch most, with a clean cable route back to the dish. An Explora installation includes connecting and testing the decoder, and our Explora setup explainer describes what to expect. DStv's own voucher installation for Explora covers two TV points; extra cabling, more screens or linked decoders fall outside it, which is one reason a quote for a larger home can differ from a voucher.
Older Homes Among the Estates
Not all of Pretoria East is new estates. Lynnwood, Faerie Glen and parts of Garsfontein have established homes whose dishes went up many years ago.
Faerie Glen
Faerie Glen combines freestanding family homes with townhouse complexes. On the older houses, the original LNB is often the limiting factor when an owner upgrades to an Explora Ultra or adds XtraView, and the existing cable may not reach the rooms now used for TV. In the complexes, the first step is checking the body corporate rules, as with any sectional title property. Where garden trees have grown into the dish's view, a realignment or a new position may be needed.
