If a dish is hanging loose, has fallen, or a cable is lying near power lines, keep everyone away from it and call 083 489 1322. Do not climb onto the roof.
Emergency DStv repairs are for the moments when waiting until next week isn't realistic. OnspotElec is open 24 hours a day, every day, and as an authorised DStv installer we offer emergency assistance across Gauteng for storm damage, fallen or dangerous dishes, damaged cabling and sudden signal loss. If you need a 24-hour DStv technician, you can call and speak to someone, day or night.
We are honest about one thing up front: we can't promise a time. When a technician can reach you depends on your location, the fault, technician availability and the work required. After a big storm, many people across the province call at once, which affects scheduling too. What we can do is tell you straight when we can realistically help.
Is It an Emergency?
Most DStv faults are frustrating rather than urgent. These are the situations where people usually need help quickly:
- A dish blown down or hanging dangerously. Strong winds and hail can tear a dish from its bracket. A dish hanging off a roof edge or gutter can fall on someone, so it is a safety issue first.
- Storm damage to the dish, LNB or cable. Lightning, hail and falling branches can damage equipment. A dish pushed out of alignment by wind can lose signal completely.
- Signal lost before a big match. Not dangerous, but if the final is tonight and the lounge is full, it matters.
- A guesthouse or business with guests waiting. Hospitality businesses with no TV in occupied rooms often can't wait. Our page on commercial DStv installation covers business setups in more detail.
- A damaged or cut cable. Cables cut during building work, chewed by rodents or pulled loose by wind need repair before signal can return.
One thing that often isn't an emergency: signal disappearing during a heavy thunderstorm. Rain fade is normal in Gauteng's summer storms, and the signal usually returns once the heaviest rain passes. If it doesn't come back after the storm, then call. The article on DStv signal in bad weather explains why it happens.
Safety FirstWhile You Wait for a Technician
Staying safe matters more than getting the picture back. Please follow these points:
- Stay off the roof. Wet, windy roofs and ladders are where serious injuries happen. Leave the dish to the technician, even if it looks like a quick fix.
- Keep clear of a dangling dish or cable. Keep children, pets and vehicles away from anything hanging from the roof or lying across a path or driveway.
- Never touch anything near power lines. If the dish, mast or cable is touching or close to an overhead power line, stay well away and contact your electricity supplier or municipality. This is not something a DStv installer should handle until the area is safe.
- Unplug the decoder in a lightning storm. Switch off and unplug at the wall if it is safe to do so. Don't open the decoder or any power supply.
- Do the safe checks from the ground. See whether every TV in the home is affected, check the cable is firmly in the decoder's satellite input, restart the decoder at the wall plug and look at the dish from the ground for visible damage.

What to Have Ready When You Call
A few details help us work out quickly what is likely wrong and what to bring.
| Information | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Your area and suburb | Lets us check availability and plan travel |
| Decoder type (HD Single View, Explora, Explora Ultra) | Different decoders need different equipment on the dish |
| The error code on screen, such as E48-32 | Narrows down whether it is a signal, smartcard or subscription issue |
| What changed, and when | A storm, roof repairs, painting, tree cutting or a new decoder often points straight to the cause |
| Photos of the dish taken from the ground | Shows whether the dish is bent, loose or down, and whether a replacement may be needed |
| Whether every TV is affected | One TV suggests a cable or decoder issue; all TVs points to the dish, LNB or main cable |
If the message on screen is E16-4 or another subscription-related notice, that is not a technical fault. Contact DStv through DStv's self-service channels first, because an installer can't fix account or payment issues. For signal messages, our E48-32 and no-signal service covers what we test.
What happens after the call
We talk through what you are seeing and tell you honestly whether it needs a visit. On site, the technician makes the installation safe first, then repairs or realigns what can be repaired. If a dish or LNB is too damaged to reuse, we explain the replacement options, covered on our dish and LNB replacement page. Emergency work is priced on the actual work and equipment needed. We cover the whole of Gauteng, including Benoni, Soweto and Krugersdorp.
Emergency DStv Questions
Yes. OnspotElec is open 24 hours, every day, and emergency DStv assistance is available. Call 083 489 1322 to check availability.
We don't quote fixed response times. It depends on your location, the fault, technician availability and the work required, and storms can bring many calls at once. We'll tell you honestly when we can help.
Give it time first. Heavy rain commonly causes short outages. If the signal doesn't return once the worst of the storm has passed, call us.
Please don't. Climbing onto a roof is dangerous, and a dish needs accurate alignment to work. Moving it by hand rarely gets the signal back.
Usually not. E16-4 is commonly linked to subscription or payment issues, which DStv resolves.
Pricing depends on the work and equipment required. Ask when you call and we will explain how the job will be quoted.
