DStv Repairs and Troubleshooting

When DStv stops working properly, the fault could be anywhere from the dish on the roof to the cable behind the TV. We find it and tell you plainly what's needed.

DStv repairs cover a wide range of problems, and the first job is always working out where the fault actually is. A blank screen might come from a storm, a loose connector, a dish that has shifted, a failed LNB, a damaged cable or the decoder itself. OnspotElec is an authorised DStv installer in Gauteng, and our DStv troubleshooting covers the whole installation so the repair matches the real cause.

Use this page to identify your type of fault, see what a technician can and can't fix, and find the right service.

Match the Fault to the Likely Cause

This table is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Several faults share the same symptoms, which is why on-site testing matters.

What We Repair, and What DStv Handles

Knowing this upfront saves time and money. Some problems are installation faults a technician can fix on site. Others belong with DStv because they involve your account or the decoder's internal hardware.

Installation faults we fix

  • Dish problems. Realignment, loose or rusted mounts, storm-damaged dishes and a blocked line of sight.
  • LNB faults. Testing and replacing failed or water-damaged LNBs, including Smart LNBs.
  • Cabling and connectors. Re-terminating corroded F-connectors, replacing damaged runs and fixing wall plates; see cable repairs.
  • Switches and splitters. Finding a faulty switch, multiswitch or unsuitable splitter and correcting how the signal is distributed.
  • Linked decoders. Checking the connections and setup between XtraView decoders in the same household.

Problems that go to DStv

  • Account, billing and subscriptions. Payments, packages, reconnections, scrambled channels and messages such as E16-4 are handled through DStv's self-service channels. We can't access or change your account.
  • Internal decoder faults. If testing shows the dish, LNB and cable are delivering a good signal and the decoder still fails, the fault is inside the decoder. We don't open decoders for component repairs; the usual routes are DStv's own repair or replacement channels, or a new decoder, which we can install and set up.

Not sure which side your problem falls on? Ring 083 489 1322 and describe what's on screen. If it sounds like an account matter rather than something a technician should look at, we'll say so.

How We Track Down a DStv Fault

Good troubleshooting eliminates one part at a time instead of replacing parts on a hunch. It usually runs in this order.

What you've noticed

When did it start, are all TVs affected, was the weather bad, and has anyone worked on the roof recently? These answers often narrow the field before the technician even arrives.

The signal at the decoder

Signal strength and quality readings show whether the decoder is getting a usable signal at all, and whether it varies from channel to channel.

Each link in the chain

Connectors, the cable run, any switch or splitter, the LNB and the dish are checked in turn with a meter. Comparing readings at different points shows exactly where signal is being lost.

The findings, before the work

You're told what's wrong and what it will take to fix, with a quote based on the real work and parts involved. Because pricing depends on the fault, a firm figure comes once the cause is known.

Some faults can't wait, such as a guesthouse losing signal on a full weekend. OnspotElec is open 24 hours, every day, and emergency DStv assistance is available; call to check availability, since scheduling depends on location, the fault and technician availability. We cover homes and businesses across Gauteng, including Soweto and Randburg.

DStv Repair Questions Answered

We can confirm whether the decoder is really the problem by testing everything that feeds it. We don't carry out component-level decoder repairs. If the decoder is faulty, DStv's repair or replacement channels are the usual route, or you can buy a new decoder and have it installed.

If one point works, the dish and LNB are probably fine. The fault is more likely in the cable or connectors to the other TV, the output of a switch or splitter, or that particular decoder.

Two quite different things cause this. A weak signal can affect some transponders before others, which is an installation issue. Channels can also be missing because of your package or subscription, which is a DStv account matter.

It depends on the condition of the dish, LNB and cables. Where most of it is sound, a targeted repair makes sense. Where everything is rusted or perished, a new installation can cost less over time, and we can quote both options.

Usually not. Try fresh batteries, make sure nothing is blocking the front of the decoder, and work through the checks in our remote troubleshooting article. A faulty remote is normally replaced rather than repaired.

E30 commonly appears after activation or renewal while the subscription is being confirmed, and it usually clears after a few minutes. E04 usually means the smartcard is missing or not inserted correctly. Neither normally needs a technician.

Pricing depends on the fault and the parts needed. Ask when you call and we'll explain how the visit and the repair are quoted.
