DStv Dish Replacement and LNB Replacement

When a dish is bent, rusted or storm-damaged, or the LNB has failed, realignment won't fix it. We replace what's needed and set the system up for the decoders you use.

DStv dish replacement is the right call when the dish itself is damaged beyond adjustment: dented by hail, bent by wind, rusted through or knocked loose so many times that the mount no longer holds. Just as often, though, the dish is fine and it's the LNB, the small unit at the end of the arm, that has failed. OnspotElec tests both before recommending anything and replaces only what's needed, for homes and businesses across Gauteng.

The LNB (low-noise block downconverter) collects the signal the dish reflects towards it, converts it and sends it down the coaxial cable. LNBs are sealed units, so when one fails it is replaced rather than repaired.

Signs It's Time for a New Dish or LNB

The dish

  • Dents or a bent reflector. The curved dish focuses the signal onto the LNB. Hail dents or a bend after strong wind distort that shape, and bending it back seldom restores it.
  • Rust that has eaten into the metal. Surface marks are cosmetic, but rust through the reflector, the arm or the mount weakens the structure and lets the dish move.
  • A cracked or bent LNB arm. If the arm is out of shape, the LNB no longer sits where the dish focuses the signal.
  • A mount that won't stay tight. Worn or enlarged bolt holes mean the dish keeps drifting off target however often it's realigned.

The LNB

  • Cracked housing or a missing weather cover. Sun and hail can split the plastic, which lets water in.
  • Water or corrosion at the LNB connector. Green or white deposits on the fitting, or moisture inside the housing, usually mean the LNB and the top of the cable both need attention.
  • Intermittent loss in good weather. If the dish has been confirmed as correctly aligned and the signal still comes and goes, an ageing LNB is a common culprit.
  • One decoder affected in a multi-decoder home. When one output of a multi-output LNB fails, only the decoder fed from it loses signal.

Faded paint on its own is not a reason to replace anything. If you're unsure whether your equipment is past its best, our article on when to replace a dish or LNB walks through it, or call 083 489 1322 and we'll arrange a test.

LNB Types Explained Without the Jargon

The right DStv LNB replacement depends on how many decoders you have, which models they are and the type of building. You don't need to choose one yourself, but this table explains what your technician is talking about.

LNB typeWhat it meansTypical use
Single outputOne connection, one cable feedA single HD decoder on one TV point
Twin outputTwo independent feeds from one LNBTwo decoders, or older PVR setups that needed two cables
Quad outputFour independent feedsSeveral decoders, or feeding a separate switch
"Universal" on the labelRefers to the range of satellite frequencies covered, not the number of outputsCan apply to any of the types above
DStv Smart LNBBuilds the job of a DStv switch into the LNB and uses UniCable outputs, which let one cable carry signal for more than one tunerDStv recommends it for all Explora installations and most XtraView setups

DStv also states that the Smart LNB is not generally suitable for multi-unit dwellings such as complexes and apartment blocks, or for commercial and retail environments. Those buildings usually run a shared dish with multiswitch distribution instead, which is covered on our complex and estate installation page.

Replacing the LNB When You Upgrade or Add a Decoder

A new decoder doesn't always work with the old LNB. Many households first discover this when they upgrade, so it helps to plan for it.

Moving to Explora or Explora Ultra. Because DStv recommends the Smart LNB for all Explora installations, an upgrade from an older HD decoder often includes an LNB change at the same time. Our Explora installation service covers the LNB, cabling and decoder setup together, so nothing is left half-done.

Adding a second decoder through XtraView. Each decoder needs its own signal feed, either from a separate LNB output or through a Smart LNB's UniCable connection. If your current LNB has only one output, it usually has to be replaced, and a second cable run may be needed. See XtraView setup for how linking works.

After any replacement. A new dish, and often a new LNB, has to be aligned and peaked on a meter; fitting new parts without that step wastes much of the benefit. We handle it as part of the job, using the same method as a standard dish alignment.

We replace dishes and LNBs throughout Gauteng, including Boksburg and Midrand. Pricing depends on what has failed and the equipment your decoders need, and you'll get a quote before work starts.

Dish and LNB Replacement FAQs

Not reliably. The reflector's exact curve is what focuses the signal, and hammering out a dent rarely restores it. If the dents are significant, replacement is usually the better fix.

Yes. If the dish and mount are sound, replacing only the LNB is common, and it's followed by a signal check and realignment.

If you have an Explora or Explora Ultra, or most XtraView setups, DStv recommends one. A single HD decoder doesn't necessarily need it, and in a complex or apartment block a shared multiswitch system is usually the right approach instead.

No. If the signal is good and the dish and mount are structurally sound, there's no reason to replace it. Testing tells you whether it's worth keeping.

Sometimes. It depends on the number of outputs and whether the LNB type suits the new decoder. A technician can check this before you buy anything extra.

Age, years of sun exposure, water getting into the housing or connector, and storm damage are the usual reasons. Sealed connectors and an intact weather cover help an LNB last longer.
