Midrand has grown quickly, and much of its housing is in apartment developments, townhouse complexes and estates rather than older freestanding homes. That makes DStv installation in Midrand a little different from the older suburbs: more of the work involves shared systems, building managers and new properties. OnspotElec is an authorised DStv installer that travels to Midrand, covering Halfway House, Carlswald, Noordwyk, Vorna Valley, Kyalami, Blue Hills, Waterfall and the areas in between.
Apartments and complexesHow Shared Dish Systems Work in Newer Developments
In most apartment blocks, one dish or a small group of dishes feeds a multiswitch that sends signal to each unit. Every unit gets its own cable from that equipment to a wall plate. Designed and maintained properly, it gives residents reliable signal without dozens of dishes on the building.
It is also why DStv's Smart LNB, a good fit for single homes, is generally not suitable for apartments and complexes. Multi-unit buildings need multiswitch distribution sized for the number of units and decoders connected to it.
When something goes wrong in a shared system, the symptoms tell you where to start looking:
- Only your unit has no signal. The fault is likely in your wall plate, the cable to your unit, the decoder lead or the decoder itself.
- Several units are affected. The problem is probably in the shared equipment, such as the LNB, multiswitch or amplifier, and the body corporate or managing agent should be told.
- A new unit with a dead wall plate. The cable may not be connected or terminated at the shared equipment. Building management can tell you how the system is set up and who looks after it.
We handle multi-unit and complex installations for owners, tenants and managing agents. If you are new to sectional title living, the article on installing DStv in an apartment or complex covers the permissions and practicalities.
New Homes and Estates
For a house still under construction in an estate, the best time to think about DStv is before plastering. Conduit with gentle bends to each room, a planned dish position with an open north-east view, and estate approval for that position all make the final dish and decoder installation tidier. If the household will want several TVs on separate channels, plan for XtraView linking from the start rather than adding cables afterwards.
DStv for Offices and Business Premises

Midrand has a large amount of office space, and some businesses want DStv in a reception, canteen or boardroom. A business installation is planned differently from a home one: there may be several screens, longer cable runs through ceilings and building rules about roof access. Our commercial DStv installation service covers offices and other business premises. The subscription itself is arranged directly with DStv.
Problems That Show Up in Newer Buildings
Newer does not mean trouble-free. In recently built properties, weak or lost signal usually comes back to a handful of general causes:
- Construction nearby. A new building going up can block a dish's line of sight.
- Poor terminations. Connectors fitted in a hurry during a build can loosen or let water in.
- Overloaded distribution. Adding decoders to a shared system that was not designed for them can weaken signal for everyone.
- Heavy summer storms. Very heavy rain can cause short outages, known as rain fade. If the signal does not return after the storm, something else needs checking.
For a no-signal message that does not clear on its own, see our E48-32 and no-signal help.
Lost signal across the whole complex? Let your managing agent know, then call 083 489 1322 to arrange a check of the shared equipment once they approve it.
Arranging DStv Work in Midrand
OnspotElec is open 24 hours a day, every day. Emergency assistance is available, and scheduling depends on where you are, the type of fault and technician availability. Quotes reflect the actual work: connecting a single unit, wiring a new home with five TV points and fitting out an office with several screens are very different jobs. Call us or fill in the quote request, and mention whether the property is an apartment, house, estate or office.
Midrand sits between Centurion, Sandton and Kempton Park, all of which we also cover.
Midrand DStv Questions Answered
Yes, along with Halfway House, Carlswald, Noordwyk, Vorna Valley and Blue Hills. OnspotElec is a mobile service, so we come to the property rather than working from a branch in Midrand.
Usually, yes. If the building has a shared system, your unit may only need a decoder connected and tested. You will need the landlord's permission for any new cabling or dish, and the building's rules apply.
That depends on the existing equipment and how much capacity it has. We can assess the system and explain what would be needed, for the body corporate or managing agent to approve.
Yes. Office and business installations are planned around the number of screens, the cable routes and building access. The DStv subscription is arranged with DStv.
