Homes in Orlando, Diepkloof, Pimville, Meadowlands, Protea Glen and the rest of Soweto change over time. A room gets added at the back, the front wall is rebuilt, a family member moves into the backyard room and wants to watch TV too. Each of those changes can affect the DStv setup. OnspotElec provides DStv installation in Soweto and handles the work that follows: extra TV points, decoder upgrades, XtraView linking and dish relocation. OnspotElec is an authorised DStv installer without a local branch: a technician drives out to your home, as we do across Gauteng.
Extra viewingGetting a TV Working in the Backyard Room
Running DStv to a room behind the main house is a common request. How it is done depends on whether the person in that room needs to choose their own channels.
- Same channel as the main house. A cable can be run from the existing decoder to a second TV. It is the simplest option, but both TVs show whatever the main decoder is tuned to.
- Own channels, same household. A second decoder can be linked with XtraView, so each TV watches something different. DStv adds an access fee per extra decoder to the subscription.
- Separate household renting the room. XtraView is meant for one household, so a tenant would normally need their own subscription. Check DStv's terms.
The cable to a backyard room usually runs along a wall or under the eaves. Keeping it clipped neatly and out of reach means it is less likely to be damaged or pulled. See our XtraView and extra TV point service, or read how DStv XtraView works before you decide.
Swapping an Ageing Decoder for a Newer Model
If your decoder is old, slow or struggling, a newer model can make a real difference. The HD Single View decoder is DStv's entry-level satellite option, while an Explora or Explora Ultra lets you record and pause live TV, and the Explora Ultra adds built-in Wi-Fi and streaming apps. Moving to an Explora usually means upgrading the LNB on the dish as well, because DStv recommends its Smart LNB for Explora installations.
Our decoder installation and upgrade service covers connecting, testing and setting up the new decoder. If you are keeping the old one for another room, it can often be linked through XtraView.

Extending the House? Plan for the Dish First
Adding a room, a second storey or a garage can block the dish's view of the north-east sky, or remove the wall it is mounted on. If that happens, the dish needs to be taken down, remounted in a clear position and realigned.
It is far easier to plan this before building starts. A builder who removes the dish in a hurry can damage the bracket, LNB or cable. Our dish relocation service covers removal and reinstallation, and our checklist for moving a dish explains what to tell your builder.
Builders starting soon? Phone 083 489 1322 and we can take the dish down safely, then put it back once the new walls are up.
Keeping the Dish Secure on the Wall
Many homeowners want the dish mounted higher on the wall, away from easy reach, and fixed with a sturdy bracket so it is harder to knock, bump or tamper with. That is sensible, as long as the new position still has a clear line of sight to the satellite and nothing on the roof or a neighbouring building gets in the way. A well-fixed dish also holds its alignment better in wind and storms.
If the dish has been knocked or the picture keeps dropping, our DStv repair service can test the signal and find the fault.
Booking a Technician
You can reach us at any hour, and urgent faults can be handled as emergencies. Phone us or use the quote request page, with the suburb, the decoders you have and what you want done. The quote reflects the work and parts involved; the visit time depends on technician availability and where in Soweto you are. We also cover Johannesburg and Roodepoort.
Soweto DStv Questions
Usually, yes. The dish can feed a second decoder or a second TV point, though older LNBs may need upgrading to supply an extra decoder.
XtraView is designed for decoders in one household. A tenant who is a separate household would normally need their own subscription.
The dish itself is often fine, but the LNB usually has to be swapped for a Smart LNB. The technician checks this on the day.
Yes, provided the higher spot still sees the satellite. The dish is remounted and realigned, and the cable rerouted if needed.
E04 is commonly reported when the smartcard is missing or not inserted correctly. Check the card is in the right way round before calling.
