Benoni's lakes, open spaces and estate developments give many homes a wide, unobstructed sky, which is good for satellite reception. The flip side is that a dish standing on an exposed roof or mast takes the full force of wind and summer storms. OnspotElec provides DStv installation in Benoni, storm-related repairs, Explora upgrades and dish and LNB replacement. OnspotElec has no office in Benoni; as an authorised DStv installer we drive out to Lakefield, Rynfield, Farrarmere, Northmead and beyond.
Exposed sitesWind, Hail and Open Ground
A satellite dish has to point very precisely at a satellite far above the equator. A small shift can be enough to lose signal, and a dish that faces strong gusts across open ground or water is more likely to move than one sheltered by neighbouring buildings. Hail can also dent the reflector or crack the LNB housing.
That does not mean an exposed spot is a bad one. It means the mounting needs to be solid: a bracket fixed into sound brickwork or a properly braced mast, bolts tightened, and cable secured so it does not flap and work the connector loose. When a dish has shifted, our dish alignment service brings it back on target and tests the signal on every TV.
Rain is a separate issue. Heavy thunderstorms between roughly October and March can interrupt Ku-band satellite signal for a while, and the decoder may show the E48-32 no-signal notification. That normally clears once the worst of the rain moves on. Our post on DStv signal problems in heavy rain explains what is normal and what is not.
If the storm has passed and you still have no picture, the dish or a connection may have been damaged. Please do not climb onto the roof to check. Ring 083 489 1322 instead, at any hour, and ask for emergency assistance if it is urgent.
Moving Up to Explora or Explora Ultra
Many households still run an older single-view decoder and want to record, pause live TV or use streaming apps. The DStv Explora Ultra is the current flagship PVR, with 4K capability, built-in Wi-Fi and the ability to record several channels at once. The previous-generation Explora is still widely used too.
- The LNB usually changes. DStv's guidance favours its Smart LNB for every Explora setup, so an older LNB on the dish is often replaced as part of the upgrade.
- Cabling is checked. A PVR needs a clean signal feed; old or water-damaged cable can cause recording and picture problems.
- Setup and testing. The decoder is connected, the signal tested, and the basics set up so you can start recording.
- XtraView is optional. If you want to keep the old decoder in another room, the two can be linked.

DStv installation in Northmead
Northmead is one of Benoni's established suburbs, with a mix of flats and older freestanding homes. Many of the dishes there have been in place for a long time, and the LNB in particular wears out. A faded, cracked or water-stained LNB cover, or a reflector that has rusted at the edges, is a sign that replacement may be due.
In a block of flats, the first question is whether the building has a shared dish or whether each flat has its own. With a shared system, a fault affecting every unit is a matter for the body corporate or landlord; a fault in only one flat may be inside that unit. Where an individual dish is allowed, check the building rules before it is replaced or moved. Our dish and LNB replacement service covers both houses and flats, and when to replace a DStv dish or LNB helps you decide.
Booking and Pricing
Call or use the quote form and tell us your suburb, the type of property and what has gone wrong. If it is urgent, mention it: our emergency DStv assistance is available around the clock, though how soon someone can reach you will depend on your suburb, the fault and which technicians are free. We quote based on the work and equipment needed, as an LNB swap and a full Explora installation are very different jobs.
Nearby, we also cover Boksburg, Brakpan and Kempton Park.
Common Questions From Benoni Homeowners
Not necessarily. Height matters less than a clear view to the north-east sky and a solid mounting. Sometimes a more sheltered wall works, as long as nothing blocks the signal path.
The reflector is often fine, but the LNB usually needs to be upgraded to a Smart LNB. The technician checks the dish's condition first.
A slightly shifted dish can be realigned. A dented reflector or cracked LNB normally has to be replaced.
For a fault inside your unit, yes. If the building uses a shared dish, involve the body corporate or landlord for anything on the central system.
